Making Exploration

Making Exploration

Objective:

To explore different sensory feedback loops by creating a geometric or other shape using different media.

Artifacts:

3D paper construction

Total time required: 58 minutes

Materials used:

  • Construction paper: 9" x 12"
  • Red & Black ball point pens
  • Black fine liner
  • Wooden pencil

Reflection:

Pros:

  • Highly emotional. Ability to add branding elements and personality.
  • Very sharp and crisp - construction.
  • High sensitivity to the touch modality(gives more control).
  • Easy viewing angles(front, back, bottom, up).
  • Opportunity to add rough highlights using pencil and then finalize with markers.

Cons:

  • Can’t undo the process(or reuse the material). Leaves paper fold marks.
  • Unable to give smooth & round edges.
  • Can be tampered or destroyed easily.
  • Time consuming.

3D clay construction

Total time required: 24 minutes and 33 seconds

Materials used:

  • Claytoon clay (yellow & grey)
  • Knife
  • Roller
  • Tooth pick

Reflection:

Pros:

  • Easy to give subtle shapes in 3D.
  • Gives real perception of final product.
  • Easy to carve details, for example windows.
  • Easy to undo the process(or reuse the material).
  • Easy to control the object.
  • Easy viewing angles(360 degree)
  • Replica/miniaturization of final product
  • Proof of concept for the final product.

Cons:

  • Forms are not sharp unless used appropriate instruments like sharp cutters or laser cutters.
  • Unable to add branding elements, for example, colors.
  • Makes the workspace dirty.
  • Can be tampered, if not used hardening clay.
  • Non-sticky surface required.

2D paper drawing

Total time required: 18 minutes and 26 seconds

Material used:

  • Paper: 9" x 12"
  • Wooden pencil

Reflection:

Pros:

  • Tight control over the object shaping.
  • Easy to conceptualize and articulate ideas.
  • Ability to perceive and pour intricate details.
  • Easy to undo the process, if used eraser(but leaves lead marks).
  • Emotional and direct connection to the object modeling.
  • Generates thinking process(hand-eye-brain co-ordination).
  • Can add engineering/architectural details, for example, specifications.
  • Ability to control the model/drawing from each angle, for example rotating the canvas.

Cons:

  • Laborious.
  • Have to draw for each viewing angles.
  • Can be tampered and lost.
  • Lead smudges over the paper.

2D digital drawing (freehand)

Total time required: 13 minutes and 26 seconds

Material used:

  • Autodesk’s SketchBook App
  • MacBook Pro 13"
  • Magic Mouse 2

Reflection:

Pros:

  • Ability to undo/erase the process at ease.
  • No lead smudge.
  • Cannot be tampered or lost.
  • Ability to select range of tools & effects.
  • Easy to undo the process.

Cons:

  • Not much control over the object.
  • The output is not the way intended to be due to indirect touchpoint over the digital canvas.
  • Not able to draw intricate/subtle details.

2D digital drawing (diagramming)

Total time required: 1 hour and seven minutes

Materials used:

  • Draw.io
  • MacBook Pro 13"
  • Magic Mouse 2

Reflection:

Pros:

  • The elements stay aligned and consistent.
  • Easy to repeat(copy) elements/shapes.
  • Ability to group and resize elements/shapes.
  • Cannot be tampered and lost.

Cons:

  • Laborious.
  • Constraints in shaping the object(lack of freehand movement).
  • Difficult to add curves.
  • Time consuming & slow.
